Brief History

Balinese script is one of the most important cultural heritages in the archipelago. Derived from Indian Brahmi script, it entered Bali around the 8th century AD through trade routes.

Spiritual Function

In Balinese tradition, each character has its own spiritual meaning, used in lontar manuscripts, mantras, and religious ceremonies.

Structure

Balinese script is an abugida — each consonant inherently carries the vowel /a/. There are 18 main wianjana (consonants) called Hanacaraka.

Modern Preservation

The Balinese government preserves the script through school curricula. It was added to Unicode in 2006 (U+1B00–U+1B7F).
