What is Lontar?

Lontar are traditional manuscripts written on palm leaves (Borassus flabellifer) using a special knife called pengutik, with Balinese script.

Production Process

Palm leaves are cut, boiled, dried, then cut into long strips. Characters are carved into the leaf surface and rubbed with soot to become visible.

Content Classification

• Kakawin — Epic poetry adapting Mahabharata and Ramayana
• Usada — Traditional medicine and herbal recipes
• Wariga — Balinese astrology and traditional calendar
• Awig-awig — Customary law and village regulations

Preservation Efforts

Gedong Kirtya in Singaraja (est. 1928) stores over 3,000 lontar titles. International institutions actively digitize lontar to prevent deterioration.
