What is Pangangge?
In abugida systems like Balinese script, every consonant has an inherent /a/ vowel. To produce other vowels, marks called pangangge are attached — positioned above, below, or beside the base character.
Main Pangangge Types
| Pangangge | Name | Example | Sound |
|---|---|---|---|
| ᬶ | Ulu | ᬓᬶ (Ki) | i |
| ᬸ | Suku | ᬓᬸ (Ku) | u |
| ᬾ | Taleng | ᬓᬾ (Ke) | e |
| ᭀ | Taleng Tedung | ᬓᭀ (Ko) | o |
| ᭄ | Adeg-adeg | ᬓ᭄ (K) | removes vowel |
Adeg-adeg: The Vowel Killer
Adeg-adeg (᭄) removes the inherent vowel from a consonant, used to create consonant clusters or final consonants.
Example: bali → ᬩᬮᬶ (Ba + La + Ulu = Bali)
